CraneOutdoors
This high tide is royalty! Here’s your chance to see the king….tide that is. Join us for a hike to learn about extreme high tides, known as king tides, which are happening more often due to environmental change. These extreme tides have a variety of impacts on the coast, including blocking access on low lying roads, flooded buildings, and impacts of erosion, debris, and salt-water damage. The king tide also provides us with a window to the future, illustrating what an average high tide might look like in a few decades due to sea level rise. On this hike you will learn what causes king tides, see the tidal impacts first-hand, and learn what The Trustees are doing to increase the coastal resilience of our treasured coastal environments.
This event is suited for all ages and will include a short indoor presentation about king tides and then a hike to view the king tide.
Please be prepared for a moderately strenuous 1-2 mile hike over gravel trails, grass, and soft sand, with some elevation gain.
OPTIONAL: After the hike, local teens will lead a Climate Cafe, a group discussion on the impacts of sea level rise and coastal flooding. Participants will brainstorm climate reslilience sollutions and what we can do about these issues in our local communities.
TEENS ATTEND FREE! To make this event more accessible to our youth leaders, we are offering free admission to teens ages 13-19.
Program Refunds/Cancellations: In the event that a program is cancelled due to severe weather, low enrollment, or other circumstances, we will notify you as soon as possible by email and issue you a full refund within 14 days of the cancellation. If you cannot attend a program as planned, contact the Trustees property 7 days prior to the start of the program to receive a full refund or to be rebooked into a future available event. Refunds will not be granted for registration cancellations placed fewer than 7 days before the start of the program for any reason. There are no refunds for missed events or late arrivals. The Trustees reserves the right to change program locations, schedules, or instructors when necessary. Note: Summer Camps and our inns and campgrounds each have separate cancellation policies.
The starting location and other relevant details for all events will be emailed to registrants approximately 24 hours before the event start at the address provided upon registration. Please note that registration closes 24 hours before the start of the event and we will not be able to accommodate walk-ins or on-site sales. Thank you for understanding.

Coastal Lecture: Awareness Inspires Conservation
As our coastlines change, the areas where sharks visit along the coast is changing. With all the shark-tivity in 2024, the team at Crane Beach has been working with experts to learn more about these important top predators, and what their presence means for the health of our coastlines.
One of the groups we’ve been collaborating with is the The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC), a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research, educating the community, and improving public safety. AWSC strives to increase knowledge of Atlantic white sharks to change public perception and conserve the species and ensure biologically diverse marine ecosystems.
Join us for a lecture with AWSC Community Engagement Manager Kristen Smith. To learn about ongoing white shark research projects being conducted and funded by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, how that research is impacting conservation and public safety efforts, and up to date information on what that research has taught us. Audience members will have an opportunity to view videos and photographs during the research season and develop their knowledge of what a shark is and what it takes to conduct white shark research.
At the end of the program, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how they can get involved in shark and ocean conservation.
About our speaker:
Kristen Smith works as the Community Engagement Manager for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC). Kristen attended Coastal Carolina University from where she received her degree in Marine Science and aided in her university’s shark research program. Kristen has been with the AWSC since 2016. In her role, she coordinates and manages a variety of initiatives, including educational programs, community outreach efforts, the college internship program, and social media campaigns. Kristen has been featured on platforms such as the Today Show, Channel 7 News Boston, and Good Morning America. These appearances have highlighted AWSC’s white shark ecotourism program and public safety initiatives related to white sharks.

Soil Culture
Soil Culture is a creative project that scrutinizes soil degradation within the capitalist infrastructure of consumption and production, where soil is exploited without redress. The project traces remnants of these extractive cycles, which result in the accumulation of trash, polluted debris, and wasted materials in landfills. Utilizing art as a catalyst, Soil Culture aims to make visible what is often invisible, fostering embodied understandings of the environmental and social impacts of soil.
Located on a landfill in Essex County, Massachusetts, Soil Culture merges ecological thinking with first-hand immersive experiences to deepen understanding and inspire action towards an aesthetic view of soil. Through collaborative and non-hierarchical methods, Soil Culture is dedicated to fostering critical dialogue and empowering communities through the exploration of soil as a vital, dynamic entity intertwined with human culture and ecological systems.
Soil Culture learns from the unceded ancestral land of the NaumKeag and Pawtucket bands of the Massachusett Tribe who have lived here for thousands of years. We recognize the interconnectedness of all beings and the deep loss that colonization and environmental degradation have caused. Soil Culture fosters a deep understanding and respect for soil and the land with its histories, to work towards a more livable future where all beings can thrive.

Beverly Plant Swap 2025
Come and join us for Beverly's third annual plant swap at Obear Park on Sunday 18 May. This event is aimed at both experienced gardeners and those who are just getting started. Its mission is to create a vibrant, connected community in Beverly with more (native) flowers, fruit, and vegetables in all of our backyards.
How the swap works:
1. Bring healthy, pest free plants to contribute - these can be seedlings, perennials that youve dug up and divided from your garden, house plants, and so on. Don't worry if you don't have anything. Come and start your garden adventure with us!
2. Label each plant. We find cut up yogurt pots work well as free lables.
3. Have fun! You don't need a plant to participate. Enjoy coffee from Beantrust, talk to gardening & sustainability experts (Green Beverly and Plant Magic), and hang with your Beverly neighbors!
Extra details:
- event starts at 9am. First 30 minutes are drop-off only so that we can organize the plants and give people time to connect over coffee
- event is rain or shine as the swap is held under the pavillion at Obear
- free coffee from the awesome Beantrust Coffee Bar will be served for those who want it; please consider bringing a reusable cup, though we will have compostable ones and a compost bag available

Coastal Lecture: Changing Natures Clocks – The Signature of Climate Change in MA
Have you noticed earlier blooms, or later fall foliage in recent years? As our environment changes, the seasonal timing of natural events is changing also. Join us for a lecture with Brandies Professor of Ecology Colleen Hitchcock, to learn about this seasonal timing, known as phenology, and how scientists study these shifts in timing to understand more about environmental trends. Scientists can’t collect all this data on their own, and participants will learn about the importance of crowdsourced data, and community science, in order to study these seasonal shifts from year to year.
About our Speaker:
Colleen Hitchcock is Professor of Ecology at Brandeis University in the Biology Department and chair of the Environmental Studies Program. She holds a Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a BS from Boston College. Hitchcock teaches courses in Conservation Biology, Ecology, Biology of Climate Change, and Participatory Science. Her academic interests focused on the role of participatory science in ecological inquiry and conservation biology specifically relating to studies of biodiversity, conservation, phenology, and climate change. She is interested in both the power of the public in scientific research and the application of participatory/citizen science research as a model for learning by students. She is one of the lead organizers for the annual City Nature Challenge in Boston which is a 4-day urban bioblitz which engages the public in science research.

eBird and ID training for the Salem Sound Bird Watch
Salem Sound Coastwatch and expert birders, Greg Power and Robert Buchsbaum, are offering a workshop designed to enhance your bird observation and data collection skills and introduce our new program, “Salem Sound Birdwatch.” This training is essential for anyone interested in volunteering to monitor wintering waterbirds for Salem Sound Coastwatch. You will be guided through the key features of the eBird mobile app, learn how to efficiently log sightings, and navigate the app’s functions. We will also cover an in-depth review of Salem Sound’s winter waterfowl and our long-term data (1988-2019). You will learn practical tips to identify common waterfowl and understand the differences in plumage. This new initiative aims to document an accurate count of migratory winter waterfowl within the Salem Sound, providing insight into the health of the Sound and various population trends.

Appleton Farms February Vacation Camp
In the winter, many people hunker down to stay indoors, but at Appleton Farms, we make the most of the cold, quiet season. There is no better place to spend winter farm days than in exploring in the snow and learning to love the outdoors in all seasons! This program is for kids who are looking to make friends, explore the forests and fields of the farm, and learn about life in New England in winter, including learning about a type of winter farming – maple sugaring! Every day will include an outdoor adventure of hiking, snowshoeing, or other farm explorations.
This is a school vacation drop-off program running Monday-Friday 9am-3pm, February 17-21. Campers should be prepared to spend days mostly outdoors and will need appropriate clothes including hats, gloves, and boots. We will have snack and lunch on the farm (families provide their own campers’ food). A parent handbook will be provided to all parents and registration requires submission of child’s health forms, per licensing requirements. This program is licensed by the Ipswich Board of Health.
$530 Member Child/$610 Nonmember Child

Hidden Histories: Black History Month Lecture
Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with “Quietly Hidden: A Story of Architectural Salvage and Discovered Craftsmanship,” a lecture that honors and educates the achievements, resilience and creativity of Black artisans. Senior Curator, Christie Jackson will present her research on Long Hill, with a story of early preservation, the untold story of enslaved artisans, and one family’s passion for history all combine. Her groundbreaking research uncovers Long Hill’s enriching history of the Federal-era ornamental carvings salvaged from Charleston, SC and used in the Sedgwick’s 1921 house that was created in part by highly skilled enslaved craftsmen.
Long Hill was the Beverly summer home of Atlantic Monthly editor Ellery Sedgwick and his family from 1916 until it was bequeathed to The Trustees in 1979. This lecture will take place inside the the historic home where participants will then join Christie as she gives a tour of the first floor of Long Hill to highlight the architectural elements included in her presentation. Participants should drive to the top of the hill, and look for our parking lot on the left.
