Soil Culture
May

Soil Culture

Soil Culture is a creative project that scrutinizes soil degradation within the capitalist infrastructure of consumption and production, where soil is exploited without redress. The project traces remnants of these extractive cycles, which result in the accumulation of trash, polluted debris, and wasted materials in landfills. Utilizing art as a catalyst, Soil Culture aims to make visible what is often invisible, fostering embodied understandings of the environmental and social impacts of soil.

Located on a landfill in Essex County, Massachusetts, Soil Culture merges ecological thinking with first-hand immersive experiences to deepen understanding and inspire action towards an aesthetic view of soil. Through collaborative and non-hierarchical methods, Soil Culture is dedicated to fostering critical dialogue and empowering communities through the exploration of soil as a vital, dynamic entity intertwined with human culture and ecological systems.

Soil Culture learns from the unceded ancestral land of the NaumKeag and Pawtucket bands of the Massachusett Tribe who have lived here for thousands of years. We recognize the interconnectedness of all beings and the deep loss that colonization and environmental degradation have caused. Soil Culture fosters a deep understanding and respect for soil and the land with its histories, to work towards a more livable future where all beings can thrive.

Beverly Plant Swap 2025
May

Beverly Plant Swap 2025

Come and join us for Beverly's third annual plant swap at Obear Park on Sunday 18 May. This event is aimed at both experienced gardeners and those who are just getting started. Its mission is to create a vibrant, connected community in Beverly with more (native) flowers, fruit, and vegetables in all of our backyards.

How the swap works:
1. Bring healthy, pest free plants to contribute - these can be seedlings, perennials that youve dug up and divided from your garden, house plants, and so on. Don't worry if you don't have anything. Come and start your garden adventure with us!
2. Label each plant. We find cut up yogurt pots work well as free lables.
3. Have fun! You don't need a plant to participate. Enjoy coffee from Beantrust, talk to gardening & sustainability experts (Green Beverly and Plant Magic), and hang with your Beverly neighbors!
Extra details:
- event starts at 9am. First 30 minutes are drop-off only so that we can organize the plants and give people time to connect over coffee
- event is rain or shine as the swap is held under the pavillion at Obear
- free coffee from the awesome Beantrust Coffee Bar will be served for those who want it; please consider bringing a reusable cup, though we will have compostable ones and a compost bag available

Planning to join? If you’re on Facebook, indicate your interest on our event page!

Coastal Hike & Climate Café

  • 290 Argilla Road, Ipswich, MA 01938, United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for a hike and climate café discussion on May 18th 12-3pm at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate. The event will start with a ~2-mile Cedar Point hike through the forest, marsh, dunes, and beach, to observe and discuss our changing coastlines. Then we will head back to the Casino at Castle Hill for a climate cafe discussion.

Climate cafés are community discussions about environmental issues. These teen-led discussions invite participants to discuss and learn more about the environment, how humans are impacting it, and how we can take action to be better citizens of the earth. Our teen leaders will share a few issues and questions, and then participants will discuss in small groups and then share out at the end. The goal of the session is to CLARIFY environmental issues impacting our community, CONNECT different members and groups of the community around a central issue that matters to everyone, and CREATE solutions that can be scaled up to help the environment.

This is a youth-led event and youth (or anyone) interested in environmental advocacy is encouraged to join us.

Learn more about climate cafés here: https://www.climate-cafe.org/

Accessibility: This hike has an moderate level of difficulty, and requires hiking 2-3 miles on unpaved and sandy trails, with moderate elevation gain for approximately 2 hours.

However, indigenous cultures have persisted for millennia, living in ways that promote biodiversity and create conditions of mutual thriving. Let’s learn about the values held in Indigenous worldviews and see how we as humans can have a positive impact on the world around us! This high tide is royalty! Here’s your chance to see the king….tide that is. Join us for a hike to learn about extreme high tides, known as king tides, which are happening more often due to environmental change. These extreme tides have a variety of impacts on the coast, including blocking access on low lying roads, flooded buildings, and impacts of erosion, debris, and salt-water damage. The king tide also provides us with a window to the future, illustrating what an average high tide might look like in a few decades due to sea level rise. On this hike you will learn what causes king tides, see the tidal impacts first-hand, and learn what The Trustees are doing to increase the coastal resilience of our treasured coastal environments.

This event is suited for all ages and will include a short indoor presentation about king tides and then a hike to view the king tide.

Please be prepared for a moderately strenuous 1-2 mile hike over gravel trails, grass, and soft sand, with some elevation gain.

OPTIONAL: After the hike, local teens will lead a Climate Cafe, a group discussion on the impacts of sea level rise and coastal flooding. Participants will brainstorm climate reslilience sollutions and what we can do about these issues in our local communities.

TEENS ATTEND FREE! To make this event more accessible to our youth leaders, we are offering free admission to teens ages 13-19.

Program Refunds/Cancellations: In the event that a program is cancelled due to severe weather, low enrollment, or other circumstances, we will notify you as soon as possible by email and issue you a full refund within 14 days of the cancellation. If you cannot attend a program as planned, contact the Trustees property 7 days prior to the start of the program to receive a full refund or to be rebooked into a future available event. Refunds will not be granted for registration cancellations placed fewer than 7 days before the start of the program for any reason. There are no refunds for missed events or late arrivals. The Trustees reserves the right to change program locations, schedules, or instructors when necessary. Note: Summer Camps and our inns and campgrounds each have separate cancellation policies.

The starting location and other relevant details for all events will be emailed to registrants approximately 24 hours before the event start at the address provided upon registration. Please note that registration closes 24 hours before the start of the event and we will not be able to accommodate walk-ins or on-site sales. Thank you for understanding.

Coastal Lecture: Changing Natures Clocks – The Signature of Climate Change in MA

Have you noticed earlier blooms, or later fall foliage in recent years? As our environment changes, the seasonal timing of natural events is changing also. Join us for a lecture with Brandies Professor of Ecology Colleen Hitchcock, to learn about this seasonal timing, known as phenology, and how scientists study these shifts in timing to understand more about environmental trends. Scientists can’t collect all this data on their own, and participants will learn about the importance of crowdsourced data, and community science, in order to study these seasonal shifts from year to year.

About our Speaker:

Colleen Hitchcock is Professor of Ecology at Brandeis University in the Biology Department and chair of the Environmental Studies Program. She holds a Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a BS from Boston College. Hitchcock teaches courses in Conservation Biology, Ecology, Biology of Climate Change, and Participatory Science. Her academic interests focused on the role of participatory science in ecological inquiry and conservation biology specifically relating to studies of biodiversity, conservation, phenology, and climate change. She is interested in both the power of the public in scientific research and the application of participatory/citizen science research as a model for learning by students. She is one of the lead organizers for the annual City Nature Challenge in Boston which is a 4-day urban bioblitz which engages the public in science research.

Invasive Plant Pulling with the Invasive Plant Task Force

Saturday and Sundays through to March 15/16th. After that we will reassess.

SATURDAY:
time: 10am-11:30am
leaders: George, Bekah, and Tim

SUNDAY:
time: 11am-12:30pm
leaders: Cheryl and Joy

Locations for both pulls: JC Philips property, 779 Cabot Street, via the Community Garden parking lot
Parking at the community garden, back of parking lot. We will walk in together from there.

NOTE: YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE TRAINED TO ATTEND. Please just come and you will be trained by the Pull Leaders as you work.
Few other business items:
Please sign the google waiver. If you get to the event and you have not - we will have a paper waiver to sign - but we prefer the google waiver if you can! Thanks.

Arrival routine: You will sign in with name and email in the parking lot. Make sure that you have submitted a waiver. We are doing this so that we can just keep track of volunteer hours and for liability reasons so we know who was working when. Additionally we are going to keep track of the locations that we are working in case the City is wondering where we have been working.

Your leader will meet with you in the parking lot and then head into the woods. So being late may be a bit troublesome ... that being said there are a lot of invasives right next to the parking lot so the group may not be working far into the woods.

Link to the waiver below.
